Trip Overview

Nangpa La Pass Trek has a unique experience and stories between Tibet and Nepal trade junction. Nagpa La Pass Everest Trek is one of the most challenging routes in the Everest region. It goes through Lukla-Namche Bazaar and Thame are Sherpa villages, over Ranjo-La Pass and to Gokyo Ri via Gokyo. From Gokyo you cross Nagozumda Glacier. The Himalayas looms largest around the great 8,000-meter peak massifs of Cho Oyo, Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu. The remote valleys beneath these peaks are threaded by ancient trails. Some like the well-traveled path to Everest Base camp are well known among Western trekkers and mountaineers. Others including the trail through Nangpa La between Namche Bazar and Tibet are known to Tibetan monks and traders.

DETAILED Itinerary

  • Day 01
Arrival in Kathmandu (1310m). Transfer to hotel.

Meeting at airport upon arrival by Makalu Adventure representative. Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal and the Kathmandu Valley is the political and cultural heart of the Kingdom. Evening some briefing about Everest Base Camp with trekking guide. Overnight at hotel.

  • Day 02
Fly Kathmandu to Lukla (2800m) and trek to Phakding (2600m)

Early morning departure for flight to Lukla (9,000 - ft) in Solu Khumbu. The airstrip has been newly paved, but the flight remains as dramatic as ever. At Lukla, you will meet your local staff. Your baggage may be carried by adventure connexion porters. Begin trekking toward Namche Bazaar, the economic center of the Sherpa homeland. The flight lasts about 40 minutes, and from Lukla we will trek for 3 hours to Phakding (2640m). Depending on the time of our morning flight, we may have breakfast in Kathmandu or Lukla. From Lukla, we will have great views of Kusum Kangru (6369m). The trail to Phakding has numerous ascents and descents through forests and rocky cliffs. Overnight at Phakding (2600m).

    Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included

  • Day 03
Trek Phakding (2600m) to Namche Bazaar (3440m)

The distance between Phakding and Namche Bazaar is not that far, however, the high altitude can make this trek difficult. The best strategy is to trek at a slow and gentle pace. Namche Bazzaar is a large town surrounded by two great valleys, Dudh Kosi and Bhote Kosi. It is also the gateway to Mount Everest.  There are well-stocked markets and shops giving you one last chance to buy anything that you may have forgotten. Overnight at Namche Bazaar (3440m)

    Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included

  • Day 04
    Acclimatization day in Namche Bazar

Adventure Connexion group will spend a second night at Namche Bazaar, which is a great place to spend an extra when acclimatising. Even if you feel fantastic, it is important to sleep at this altitude as it will help in your ascent to Everest Base Camp. During the day, you can hike to the Sherpa village of Khunde and Syanboche , or you can choose to relax and explore the mountain village of Namche. Overnight at Namche Bazaar (3440m)

    Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included

  • Day 05
Trek Namche Bazaar (3440m) to Thame (3820m).

Hike through rhododendron and pine forest and pass several small villages including Phurte, Samshing, Thesho. Lunch enroute. Chance to visit a Buddhist nunnery in Thame.

The forests en route are excellent areas to look for musk deer and pheasant of many species including the Impeyan pheasant (the extravagantly colored national bird of Nepal). In the meadows and cliffs above you may see Himalayan tar. After Thame head for the small village of Samde and cross the Bhote Kosi (river). Climb gradually to the potato farming village and trading center of Thame located at 13,000 ft. (Hiking time about 5 hours).Overnight at Thame (3820m).

    Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included

  • Day 06
Trek Thame (3820m) to Marulung (4150m)

You head north into the remote Nangpa Valley. Until 2005 this valley was off limits to trekkers because it was a main access route to the Nangpa La, a high pass linking Nepal with Tibet. For hundreds of years, many Tibetan traders have traveled this route, bringing a variety of Chinese goods on the backs of their yaks to sell in Namche Bazaar. Camp at Marulung (4150m).

    Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included

  • Day 07
    Trek to Lunag (5070m)
  • Day 08
    Trek to Dzasampa (5400m)
  • Day 09
    Trek to Nangpa Glacier (5700m)
  • Day 10
Excursion around Nangpa La Pass (5716m)
  • Day 11

  • Day 12
    Trek to Aire (4910m)
  • Day 13
Trek to Gokyo (4790) crossing Renjo La Pass (5360m)

Today’s walk is challenging. Adventure Connexion team leave Lungden, and a fairly stiff climb for an hour or so brings you to a lake. You continue ascending for a couple of hours until you reach Black Lake and the col. Here you can see your objective, the Renjo La, and its prayer flags some 250m /800ft above. The trail is now very good - stone steps almost all the way to the pass. It zigzags across the hillside, and you will really feel the altitude here. It takes between five and six hours to reach the pass. The descent to Gokyo will take around three hours, and the first part is often snow covered and moderately steep. It is marked with cairns. Eventually the path becomes a good trail which leads to the Dudh Pokhari Lake and Gokyo. Camp at Gokyo (4750m).

ALTITUDE ACCLIMATIZATION

To get the most from your trek, and to stay safe, it is important to follow acclimatization guidelines. At Makalu Adventure, whenever possible, we follow the acclimatization formula set out by Drs Jim Duff and Peter Gormly; experts in Wilderness Medicine. "Above 2000m, altitude illness is a possibility and above 2500m it becomes common".
"As a rough guide, above 2500m the maximum daily height gain between sleeping altitudes should not exceed 400m, with a rest day every third day or after every 1000m of sleeping ascent".
"Avoid overexertion and breathlessness while acclimatizing, stay well hydrated, avoid alcohol, excess caffeine, salt and protein, your diet should be 70% carbohydrate above 3500m".

Excellent service and a welcome by Makalu Adventure

I've known and worked with Mohan and Makalu Adventure for nearly 15 years. In that time I've led many treks and high altitude expeditions to Nepal (15 expeditions over 8000m and counting). His company provides an excellent service and a welcome that I look forward to every season. The Thamel Eco Resort is a center of tranquility in Kathmandu and the perfect place to start and finish the Himalayan Adventure. The staffs are now like family and I hope to return for many years with the guarantee of safety and security that he offers in the mountains.
