Machame Route - Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

Trip Overview

Albeit a bit steeper, the Machame route is often considered to the most beautiful route up Kilimanjaro. Accommodation on the route is in tents. The Machame route is also referred to as the "Whiskey route", and offers one views of incredible late afternoon sunsets at Shira Camp, to breathtaking views of Kibo as the later afternoon mists clear. The Machame route is normally completed in a minimum of 6 days and follows the acclimatization principle of “climb high and sleep low” For this reason, the Machame route takes you from 3200m at Shira Camp, high to Lava Tower (4630m) on the third day and back down again to 3950 for an overnight stay at Barranco camp (3950m.

DAY 2: Machame Gate (1490m) - Machame camp (2980m)

DAY 3: Machame camp (2980m) - Shira camp (3840m)

Hiking time: 4-6 hours
Distance: About 9 km's
Habitat: Moorland

DAY 4: Shira (3840m)-Lava Tower (4630m)-Barranco camp (3950m)

Hiking time: 6-8 hours
Distance: About 15 km's
Habitat: Semi alpine desert

DAY 5: Barranco camp (3950m)- Barafu camp (4550m)

Hiking time: 5-7 hours
Distance: About 13 km's
Habitat: Alpine desert

DAY 6: SUMMIT ATTEMPT

Barafu camp (4550m)-Uhuru Peak (5895m)-Mweka (3100m)
Hiking time: 6-8 hours to reach Uhuru Peak
6-8 hours to descend to Mweka
Distance: About 7 km's ascent - 23 km's descent
Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit

DAY 7: Mweka camp (3100m)- Mweka Gate (1980m)

Hiking time: 2-4 hours
Distance: About 15 km's
Habitat: Forest

This is one of the shortest but steepest routes to the Southern Glaciers, affording one views of the forests, valleys and glaciers, and recommended for very fit climbers as you altitude is gained quickly. more
